Kauai Alternative Vacation Accommodation Association

We are proud to announce a new organization on Kauai: KAVA. This non profit is a business league as such, and will be representing TVR and B&B owners on Kauai. KAVA is a membership organization and membership dues will be used to educate the public about the benefits of TVR/B&B to the local community. Dues and donations will also be used to hire legal counsel and for litigation should it become necessary. We encourage all vacation rental owners to join, and Associate Memberships will be offered to non-owners but who are working in the industry (Cleaners, gardeners, window washers, renting agents etc.)

We realize that many residents are concerned with vacation rentals because there is a lack of regulation, and some times because of that there are noise and parking issues. We would like to solve this problem by offering clear guidelines to members, which might include the following:
  • Limitations on the number of guests allowable in any one vacation rental. This would obviously depend on the size of the home, but the goal is to limit rentals to small groups. Often larger groups create an undesirable noise level, and may be better served in a hotel.
  • TVR guests should be clearly instructed where to park, and most rentals should have off road parking available if the number of guests are regulated.
  • Undesirable late night noise can be controlled by having house rules posted in each property, and all TVR owners should ask their guests to comply with those rules. (We will supply sample house rules in PFD format that can be downloaded and printed from this site, and displayed at your rental property). Unruly guests should be asked to leave.

  • KAVA is also planning to run radio campaigns similar to the ones run by the "Kokua Coalition", our Oahu counter part. These will be aimed to make the local community understand that TVR and B&B contribute to the local economy and are desirable on Kauai.
  • We are planning to do charitable community work. One suggestion is to provide a network of homes that could provide reduced rate or free accommodation at short notice to family & friends of Kauai residents who have suffered some emergency or disaster.
  • The KAVA website will contain FREE listings & contact info for local vacation rental support businesses, like cleaners, gardeners, etc. This will help TVR and B&B owners if they need new or additional help, and the support businesses to obtain new customers.
  • We will recommend local stores to purchase TVR/B&B supplies from to support the community and keep as much money on Kauai as possible.

KAVA is being set up right now. The Association is already formed, and we expect to be able to accept membership towards the middle of April. Please bare with us - we are working hard to make all this happen. We'll need your support soon!
